Ethics in the aviation industry
“Professionalism in aviation is the pursuit of doing it right, all the time, even when nobody’s looking,” said Jeff Wofford, group lead of the Professionalism Working Group of the NBAA Safety Committee. This can apply to everything from adequately pre-flighting to making sure you're honest during your medical evaluations. Being an ethical aviator ensures:
- Being able to recognize and assess concerns with the manufacturing quality of your aircraft and the operation of such.
- Following a code of professional ethics.
The number one priority in Aviation is your safety and the safety of others, which means that we are responsible to calculate all facets of flight, no matter the category (maintenance, ATC, pilot), and be able to vouch for ourselves and our efforts. That we worked hard to guarantee a safe environment, and that anything outside of that was not in our control.
Professionalism in a career as unforgiving such as aviation, goes beyond acting kindly to our peers, or getting our work done on time. As Wofford said, we must do things RIGHT, regardless of whether we are being monitored. It is our duty and commitment to be ethical in our approach to aviation, as our lives as well as the growth of our industry depend on it.
Please watch the following video on decision making as a pilot, that demonstrates the importance of ethics in aviation and acting in a calculated manner.
